Description

Un Poco Picante means "a little bit spicy” and is Serena Bass’s current favourite: stylish Mexican food. Spicy enough to reveal interesting flavours but not so spicy it will obliterate your tastebuds. Maybe it’s simplest to say that (on a much grander scale, obviously) Serena Bass is New York’s Ruth Pretty. She’s a top caterer, an executive chef (at Lido Harlem), a writer about food and related delights, cooking teacher, menu developer and restaurant entrepreneur. And she does it all with organised flair, prompting New York magazine to describe it as "Manhattan’s best catered food, hands down”. Need we say more than she catered Sarah Jessica Parker’s wedding? Or that Ruth is so excited about having Serena at Springfield she is going to be an assistant?   When Ruth and Serena met nearly 10 years ago, they clicked. Instantly. Serena borrowed Ruth’s catering kitchen to create her son Sam’s all-time favourite lemon curd cake for his gorgeous wedding to Wellingtonian Kathryn, catered by Ruth and her team. So Serena is delighted to deliver on her promise "do a class at Springfield” while on a private visit. "Mexican is one of my favourite foods, and most popular classes. I love the bright flavours, making it contemporary, simple and fresh and above all delicious,” she says. Her book Serena, Food & Stories: Feeding Friends Every Hour of the Day won a prestigious James Beard Award. Incidentally, Serena’s Lemon Curd Cake is still a favourite with brides and home bakers.  Click here for the recipe.
