Ruth Pretty News
August 2009
EASY PEELING
Many people smile when they see these old-fashioned apple peelers (which core and slice apples simultaneously). Janine Scott is smiling most of all – after buying one of these highly efficient pieces of kitchen equipment she won a $50 voucher to spend at the Ruth Pretty Kitchen Shop.
Living locally in Te Horo, Janine does not have far to go to make her selection. She attends the cooking school classes from time to time, and is delighted at her good fortune. She will also be delighted with the apple peeler, as even though spring is in the air there is still plenty of time for delicious apple dishes.
A TOAST FOR LIBBY

Maybe it was the lure of two highly-prized tickets to Toast Martinborough on offer - the Spring 2009 series cooking school classes sold out very quickly indeed. Libby Campion of Waikanae won the coveted tickets, and will have the special pleasure of Ruth cooking whitebait fritters, asparagus and hollandaise sauce for her and a friend in Martinborough.
For everyone else, go to www.premier.ticketek.co.nz at 9am on Wednesday 7 October and book your own tickets for the Sunday 15 November 2009 event. Or contact the Toast Martinborough office (friends@toastmartinborough.co.nz) about becoming a Friend of New Zealand's premier Wine Food and Music Festival and getting advance booking opportunities. Toast tickets sell out even faster than Ruth Pretty cooking classes!

Surrounded by olives, naturally Ruth's culinary imagination has turned to the Mediterranean.
Her two different demonstrations will be:
Sunday Lunch in Rioja
For caterer and cookbook author Ruth Pretty, travelling is as more about local food and wine than scenery and history. She loves the food culture of Spain and the gusto with which families enjoy meals together. There are olive groves literally hundreds of years old all over Spain, so inevitably olive oil is an essential part of Spanish food. Taking this as her theme, Ruth will share her favourite style of generous, flavoursome food suitable for friends and families, with liberal use of robust olive oil. Spring ingredients trigger her seasonal culinary imagination so be ready for a taste of Spain with Ruth Pretty.
Sunday Lunch in Provence
France is probably Ruth Pretty's favourite country to visit and to enjoy the relaxed food that has evolved in the sun of Provence. Think tomatoes, onions, garlic and fruity olive oil and you have the beginnings of many a tasty dish - maybe with a little seafood or some tender spring vegetables. Mediterranean food is the world's most popular and for good reason - it is ideal for that good life, enjoyed al fresco in the sunshine. Ruth's food is perfect for this situation - full of flavour, not terribly complicated, seasonal ingredients of the best quality and always welcome.
RUTH IN MARLBOROUGH
Hunter's Garden Marlborough is another iconic festival, and Ruth is delighted to be a presenter for the third time: Friday 6 November, 7.00pm - 9.00pm, at the Marlborough Civic Theatre, $50.00 per person.
Her theme, appropriately, is Christmas in the Garden. Looking to nature for her inspiration, Ruth revels in Christmas festivities and evoking all the senses of smell, sound and taste for everyone sharing your Christmas table. This will be food from Ruth's heart but with the WOW factor. Earthy, interesting and fuss free dishes to delight friends and family in your garden on Christmas day.
